Nicaragua Cancels Wind Power Project Amayo

Negotiations between Amaya S.A. and the Energy Ministry for renewing permits and licenses came to an end.

Sources close to the negotiation process told newspaper Prensa that the consortium desisted on continuing with the required paperwork.

The same source also informed that "...the license for Amayo II was officially canceled, and that a 50 MW concession was granted to company Eolo. This company is owned by a Mexican millionaire, friend of Humberto Ortega, the President's brother".

The Ministry of Energy and Mines granted an energy generation license to Amayo Consortium, in order to resume the II phase of their wind energy project.

This project could begin operating in 2010, after a $55 million investment.

Nicaraguan Businessmen Support Amayo Energy Project

The Nicaraguan Council of the Private Enterprise asked the government to permit the expansion of project Amayo.

On August 20th, the government authorized Amayo to conduct feasibility studies for expanding the project. However, eight days after, it decided to cancel the permits, after realizing that the consortium had already started construction of the second phase of the project.

'Amayo' Wind Farm Would Increase Capacity

Nicaragua granted "Consorcio Eólico Amayo" authorization to conduct feasibility studies for expanding the wind farm located in the country's south.

In the second phase 11 wind turbines would be installed, each one capable of 2.1 MW, for a combined total of 23.1 MW.
