Official reports, without giving precise figures indicate that "the greatest investment in tourism is led by the private sector through hotels, restaurants and tour operators".
Between January and May, the total number of tourists entering the country was 432,000.

The expected revenue from tourism this year is $380 million.
In the first nine months of the year the number of tourists coming to the country increased by 6.9% compared to the same period in 2011.
Between January and September 530,574 tourists arrived, 98,907 more than in the same period in 2011.
"Foreign exchange earnings amounted to 1.6731 billion, an increase of 19.5%, or approximately an additional $273 million compared to the previous period.
In the first half of the year tourists arrivals to the country nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2010.
Expenditure by the approximately 1.2 million visitors was $908.8 million, a 10.3% increase compared to last year.

In the first four months of 2011 more than 700 thousand visitors came to the country.
The economic boom that Panama is experiencing is also affecting the tourist industry which has grown significantly in recent months.
Along with the increased the number of visitors comes an increase in spending made during their stay.
The number of visitors in May was 105,800, 20% more than in the same period last year.
May becomes the month with largest year-on-year increase so far in 2010.
Salomón Shamah, head of the Panamanian Tourism Authority, told Prensa.com that, "this growth is expected to continue in the coming months with the arrival between July and September of Carnival's Freedom cruise liner at the Colon 2000 cruise terminal.
