Driven by an increase in local consumption, the Nicaraguan poultry union plans to produce 766 million units this year.

The National Association of Poultry Farmers and Food Producers (ANAP) reports that the illegal entry of the product is one of the factors that is preventing them from raising production further in order to support the growth in consumption. According to the union, per capita egg consumption in 2015 was 124 units.

Alfonso Valerio, president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Poultry and Minor Species, told Elnuevodiario.com.ni that "... while consumption in 2007 was 60 eggs per year, it has gone up to 124 units per capita. Valerio said the sector aims to soon reach, although an exact date was not specified, the average consumption of eggs in Central America, which is 150 units per capita per year."

If the industry manages to produce the estimated 766 million eggs, it will have exceeded the target initially set because "...According to the Plan for Production, Consumption and Trade in the 2016-2017 cycle, producers, along with the Government's Cabinet on Production, Consumption and Trade, projected egg production was 654 million this year."
