Nicaragua Hosts Forestry Congress

From 29 June to July 1 the VII Central American Forestry Congress will take place in Managua. The event is titled: "Forests without borders, for everyone and for the common good."

The forum, in which 400 specialists from the region are expected to participate in, will analyze the state of forestry and agricultural policies in Central America, said Huerta Pedro Altamirano, member of the Organizing Committee.

"The event is aimed at organizations, students, researchers, environmentalists, private companies, cooperatives, government institutions and indigenous communities in Central America", reported Proceso Digital on its website.

From September 25th to 28th the event to be attended by 600 participants and experts from the Central Dominican Republic and Mexico will be held in San Pedro Sula.

Forest Concessions Grow in Guatemala

The size of areas granted as forest concessions to communities, mainly in the northern Peten zone, rose from 510,000 hectares in 2007 to 680,000 in 2011.

In the area, seventy-two companies certified by Rainforest Alliance, predict that they will generate exports worth $9 million in 2011, said Jose Roman, regional manager for the Central America and Caribbean ‘Trees’ Program by Rainforest Alliance.
