Nicaragua: Demand for Equality in Trade Conditions

The Superior Council of Private Enterprise has complained to the government about unfair competition regarding the importation of eggs from Honduras, and the illegal actions of the “No Pago” movement.

Thursday, July 14, 2011

The Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP) has released a statement in which it expressed its “deepest concern at two events in the economic sphere which if not remedied by the government in a timely and accurate manner in the short-term could bring irreversible consequences of great magnitude for our immediate economic performance as a nation.”

Regarding “the situation of unfair trade being suffered by poultry producers over the import, which is still not very clear, of eggs from Honduras” COSEP states that “Honduras must open the doors to Nicaraguan products creating a level playing field between both countries allowing Nicaraguan farmers to also export to the Honduran market.

The statement also criticised the “No Pago” movement who it said blocked roads and “this week are besieging the offices of microfinance companies, creating a negative effect for thousands of small and medium producers who on the one hand have suffered the loss of their perishable products and on the other hand are seeing the possibilities of access to credit dissipate quickly.” The statement continues “We call on the members and leaders of the “No Pago” movement to express their ideas in a civic manner using appropriate legal channels which allow a satisfactory and definitive solution to their cases and not to continue to affect our entire population which is struggling selflessly day day to make a better country.”
