Nicaragua: 5.1% Y-o-Y Inflation up to March 2019

During the third month of the year, the CPI registered a 1.82% monthly variation, mainly because of the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

In cumulative terms, domestic inflation was 1.84%, year-on-year inflation was 5.09%, 0.25% higher than in March 2018, while base year-on-year inflation was 5.25% (4.20% in March 2018), reported the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN).

The report explains that "... The alcoholic beverages and tobacco division registered a 31.37 percent variation and contributed 0.357 percentage points. In this result, for its marginal contributions, the variations of cigarette (45.83%), beer (8.79%) and rum (11.63%) were highlighted, with a joint contribution of 0.357 percentage points.

The Food and non-alcoholic beverages division registered a 1.62 percent variation, with a contribution of 0.559 percentage points, resulting from the increase in the prices of boneless beef (5.20%), orange (19.65%) and banana (7.09%), with a joint contribution of 0.238 percentage points.

On the other hand, the division of Goods and diverse services registered a 3.76 percent variation, with a contribution of 0.260 percentage points, because of the increase in the price of toilet paper (12.29%), bath soap (10.47%), and toothpaste (6.79%), with a joint contribution of 0.156 percentage points

The March Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed a monthly increase of 1.82% (0.14% in March 2018), mainly because of the rise in prices of some goods and services of the divisions: Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (31.37%), Miscellaneous goods and services (3.76%), and Food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.62%), which together contributed 1.176 percentage points to the observed variation, reported the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN).
