Nicaragua: $3 million for Tourist Port

An expansion will be carried out of the port of San Juan del Sur in order for it to have four cruise ships docking at the same time and add infrastructure to cater to tourists.

According to Rodrigo Castro, an official from Empresa Portuaria Nacional in San Juan del Sur, this project aims to diversify services and will favor a much faster attention to tourists and embarking and disembarking.

Castro explained that the works include five buildings, recreational areas, shops, a craft market, as well as improvements to the transport of tourists arriving on cruise ships. It is expected that the work, to be funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, will be carried out within 14 to 16 months.

"... docking capacity will increase, with the number of small vessels operating at the same time bringing passengers from the cruise ships ashore going from one to four", reported Press-latina.cu.

$50 million Investment Proposal in Port Terminal

Ports of Honduras: $135 million Inaccesible

Although the financial resources needed to modernize the port of Cortés are available through an IDB loan which has already been approved, lack of implementation is preventing work from starting.

The year 2014 had been set as the date when work would start on the modernization of the four main ports but the National Port Company (ENP by its initials in Spanish) has not been able to start and works are still paralyzed, despite having borrowed $135 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Honduras Plans to Expand Port of Cortés

The port authority is working on a $225 million shipping terminal expansion project.

The head of Honduras' national ports authority (ENP in Spanish), Mynor Pinto, indicated that the project comprises the fitting out of a grain terminal and another for cruise ships.

The funds invested will be overseen by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).
