Nicaragua: $14.3 million for Electricity

The National Assembly has approved a loan from the European Investment Bank to expand electricity coverage in rural areas.

The government plans to implement the project in 3000 rural communities in different areas of the country, including the Caribbean coast. With this investment in the power grid coverage is expected to increase in rural areas from its current 64% to 86%.

Eleconomista.net reports that "...The European Investment Bank (EIB) agreed to the disbursement of €10.8 million through an agreement signed with the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Empresa Nacional de Transmisión Eléctrica and Empresa Nacional de Electricidad."

$20 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and $75 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) are to be used for the construction of new homes and for expanding the electricity grid in rural areas.

El Salvador to Lay 500 KM of Power Lines in 2010

In 2010, AES El Salvador will build 500 KM of electric power lines together with Fomilenio.

The joint program intends to deliver electricity to isolated populations in the north of the country.

"Fomilenio administers and executes a fund of more than $400 million approved by the United States to El Salvador through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)", reported Laprensagrafica.com.
