New port arrangements announced for Panama

The expansion of the Panama Canal will bring important changes to the logistics of the region, especially with respect to transshipments.

The president of the Latin American delegation of the American Asociation of Port Authorities (AAPA), Armando Duarte of Colombia, said, "The ports must evaluate and redefine their roles, adjusting competitively to the new situation."
Delegates at the Latin American ports conference analyzed the investments each country must make to adjust to the expansion of worldwide shipping.
Panama's chief administrator of the Maritime Authority, Fernando Solórzano, said his country's investments in maritime shipping will be 8.4 billion dollars, including the 5.25 billion being spent on canal expansion.
The investments must be made by 2014, when the renovation of the canal is completed.
