New Food Safety Rules in the U.S.

Two new programs propose verification regulations on foreign suppliers for importers of food used for human and animal consumption.

The new rules proposed by the Bureau of Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA), is in the process of public review and comment for a period of 120 days.

The first set of rules "... would require U.S. importers to verify that their suppliers produce foods that meet U.S. Food Safety standards and are applied to all foods sold in that country, regardless of where they are produced" reported Elnuevodiario.com.ni.

U.S. Buyers will have to monitor shipments, possess certifications for batch compliance, perform periodic inspections and tests of the facilities. They must also ensure that identified hazards are being attended to properly.

The other proposed regulation by the FDA, suggests establishing a system of accreditation of third party auditors or certification bodies to conduct food safety audits and issue certificates for foreign facilities.

Food Safety Standards in the U.S.

The U.S. FDA has extended, until January 27 2014, the period for comment on new regulations for foreign suppliers and external auditors.
