Mexico Eliminates Tariffs on Eggs

In order to overcome a shortage in the market and the consequent rise in prices, Mexico is eliminating tariffs from egg imports from any country that provides them.

A statement from the Ministry of Economy in Mexico reads:
Given the significant recovery in the price of eggs in the last few days, the Secretary of Economy, Bruno Ferrari, announced this afternoon the elimination of tariffs on imports of this product from countries with which we have trade agreements.

"This bill seeks to stabilize the market, complementing the supply, lowering prices and guaranteeing supply to the population", said the official.

At a press conference, where he was accompanied by the President of the National Association of Supermarkets and Department Stores (ANTAD), Vicente Yanez, Secretary Ferrari reported that the business sector’s commitment is to seek the best prices for eggs as well as decision not to increase the price of white bread and sweet bread.

He said that according to the SE’s records, the average price seen in supermarkets between was between 22 and 26 pesos, while at central warehouses it is between 28 and 30 pesos per kilogram as of today.

Tariff Eliminated on Chicken Imported from the US

The USA has agreed to reduce to 0% the tariff on chicken leg quarters imported from the US market for the Central American countries under DR-CAFTA.

The request to remove the tariff was made by Guatemala weeks ago.  Chicken legs, both frozen and refrigerated, will enter the Central American market with 0% tariff when all the signatory countries of CAFTA-DR have completed the application process with the Department of Commerce.

Mexico: Dutry Free Lemons and Tomatos

Tariffs have been temporarily removed for the import of lemons and green tomatoes, while there will be new quota of 300.000 tons for foreign chicken.

At a press conference, the Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, the Deputy Minister of Revenue of the Ministry of Finance, Miguel Messmacher and Undersecretary of Agriculture of Sagarpa, Jesus Aguilar Padilla, announced the measures implemented by the Government of the Republic to help contribute to stabilizing prices and meeting the increased demand for some commodities.

Removal of Tariffs on Wheat Flour

In order to mitigate the impact of rising raw material prices on bakeries, the government of El Salvador is investigating eliminating the import tax.

The head of the ministry of economy, Armando Flores said, "We are exploring the possibility of temporarily eliminating tariffs, o as to help mitigate the price increase that has been felt."

Guatemala to Eliminate Tariff on Wheat Flour

The Ministry of Economy proposed the elimination of the 5% tariff on imports of wheat flour.

The finance minister, Erick Coyoy, said the measure seeks to alleviate the increased price in commodities on the international market.

"The proposal must be submitted and endorsed by the Council of Ministers of Economy of Central America (Comieco)," stated the article Elperiodico.com.gt.
