Multinational BPO Closes Operation in Costa Rica

An announcement has been made that the U.S. firm Startek will be closing its operation in the country and laying off its 550 employees.

Following in the footsteps of Intel Corporation and Bank of America, the company's business process outsourcing (BPO for short) operation has announced it will close its center in Costa Rica, as confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Alexander Mora in an article on Elfinancierocr.com.

"...Mora explained that this was a corporate decision relating to the need to migrate and evolve into other activities and said that the news was given to Luis Guillermo Solís, president of the Republic in the middle of the week."

Sophisticated Call Centers in Costa Rica

Call centers with basic operations that were predominant in the country in the past decade are moving now to countries with lower cost structures such as Honduras or El Salvador.

The U.S. based company will open a 400 employee call center in the first months of 2010.

The 37.000 square feet facility will be located in América Free Trade Zone, in Heredia.

StarTek engages in Business Process Outsourcing, and currently has 19 facilities, from which it provides customer service and tech support for U.S. and Canada companies.
