More Underground Parking in Panama

The Mayor of Panama has announced two new concession projects for underground parking spaces in Panama City.

Thursday, June 6, 2013

The institution announced that underground parking will be built at the site of the Street Vendors and Crafts Market on plaza 5 de Mayo, an initiative that already has the approval of the Municipal Council of Panama. Recently this local government approved an agreement to authorize it, signing a concession contract for the development of the parking lots.

The Mayor has the authority to negotiate and sign the concession contract for the study, design, construction, maintenance, management and operation of the property at the site of the Street Vendors and Crafts Market, part of Banco Hipotecario Nacional.

However, residents and businesses in the area have shown great annoyance with this initiative. According to Gerardo Cardenas, president of the Association of Members of the Craft Market, they have not been taken into account and what little they know has been gleaned from the media. "There is talk that we are to be relocated, but have not even been approached to talk about it. We are calling on the authorities to provide further information on this issue," he said.
