Motorcycles in Central America: $237 Million in Business

From January to September 2020, motorcycle imports in the region totaled $237 million, 11% less than in the same period of 2019, a drop explained by the behavior of purchases from El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica.

Downturn in Central American Purchases
Between January and September 2019 and the same period of 2020 the value imported in the region decreased by 11%, going from $265 million to $237 million.

In contrast to the behavior of imports in general, for the periods in question, purchases made from Austrian companies increased by 12%.

Guatemala, Main Importer
In the first nine months of 2020, the main importer in the region continued to be Guatemala, with $118 million, followed by Honduras with $40 million, Costa Rica with $27 million, Nicaragua with $26 million, El Salvador with $21 million and Panama with $5 million.

Nicaragua and Guatemala were the only markets in the region that during January to September 2020 increased their imports in year-on-year terms, registering 54% and 1% variations, respectively.

Costa Rica reported a variation of -20%, Honduras -29%, Panama -31% and El Salvador -37%.

Most Important Suppliers
From January to September, 55% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 31% from India, 2% from the USA, 2% from Japan and 2% from Germany.

India is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 purchases from that country represented 27% and in 2020 the proportion rose to 31%.

From January to March 2019, Central American imports of motorcycles totaled $103 million, and purchases from companies in India decreased by 19% over the same period in 2018.
