More than a million tourists expected in Honduras

More than a million foreign tourists could visit Honduras this year, and if they do they'll likely spend more than 600 million dollars.

"We've had 11 percent growth over last year, while last year tourism grew by 18 percent," said Tourism Minister Ricardo Martínez.
"We hope that this year we'll earn 600 million dollars worth of foreign exchange."
Martínez said tourism is the third most important earner of foreign exchange in Honduras, after remittances and the maquila sector.

Guatemala: Slight Increase in Tourism

As of July 1, 069, 805 visitors have entered the country, 2.3% more than in the same period in 2011.

According to the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Intur), during the same period, the amount of foreign exchange recorded increased by 1.4%, with $784 million coming in.

Tourism growing fast in Central America

Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama are among the fastest-growing tourist areas in Central America, according to the World Tourism Organization.

In El Salvador, data from the Tourism Ministry shows that the sector has been growing at 8 percent and expects this to continue despite the national economic crisis that has driven the inflation rate to 8.4 percent per year.

Costa Rica's tourism retains its shine

Tourist arrivals in Costa Rica grew by 12.5 percent over last year during the first half of the year.

The Tourism Chamber said in a prepared statement that in the first six months of 2008 just over 1 million tourists arrived by air, an increase of almost 90,000 over the first half of 2007.
