It will be the fifth wind farm to be built in Nicaragua, and is expected to have a generating capacity of 100 MW, more than that of any other currently operating and under construction.
The Environmental Management Plan project was presented at the Marena departmental delegation , in Rivas, and "as stated in the project documentation, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Marena, and issued the necessary guarantee for the implementation of the works. "
Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "As a representative of the investor group, Eduardo Holmann said El Ventarrón wind farm could generate up to 100 megawatts, and its construction will begin in the last quarter of 2013. Holmann said only they expect to acquire the license in the second quarter of 2013 to begin construction of the wind farm, which would be concluded between the third and fourth quarter of 2014. "
The high cost of production exceeds the average sales price for energy, and almost doubles the average purchase price from its main supplier, the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.
An audit report by the Comptroller General of the Republic of Costa Rica said that the state wind power project run by the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz generated losses of just over $1 million, and that "inconsistencies were determined in revenues, costs and results of the indicators of financial viability of the project; specifically the quantity and value of the expected annual energy was overestimated; and investment costs, operation and maintenance were underestimated. Work has begun on a new park in the Isthmus of Rivas, a $160 million project which will generate 44 MW.
The project belongs to the company Eolo of Nicaragua, who have invested $160,536,670 according to records at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA).
The company has selected the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, to begin its project in Nicaragua.
Vestas received an order for the manufacture of 22 generating units of 1.8 MW each, for the wind project ‘La Fé’ (The Faith), which will generate 40 MW of energy and will be located in San Martin, Nicaragua.
The regulatory agency has authorized the company Eolo de Nicaragua S.A., to construct a wind farm in the department of Rivas.
According to the draft submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marena), the new wind farm would be located in the town of Rivas on kilometer 123 of the Panamericana Sur Highway, near the wind farm Amayo.
