Chinese business mission seeks hydroelectric projects in Guatemala

A mission from China's hydro-power industry is visiting Guatemala to check out the possibility of participating in hydroelectric projects.

President Álvaro Colom has announced his intention to wean the nation away from oil by promoting renewable energy.
Tong Jiandong, leader of the Chinese mission, said they were looking at possibilities for small 50 mw dams with a wide distribution range.

800 MW in Hydroelectric Potential on Shared River

The hydroelectric potential of the Usumacinta River, which runs through Guatemala and Mexico, is only partially exploited.

Guatemala has commented that there is a possibility of building four small hydropower stations on the Usumacinta River, which would generate 800 megawatts of electricity in total.

New Hydroelectric Project in Guatemala

The Sismite hydroelectric project received the green light for a technical study from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).

The Director General of Energy of the MEM approved the use of the Montagua River by the company Generadora Nacional to build the Sisimite hydroelectric project.

World Energy Research (WER) closed three contracts for constructing hydro power plants, and for purchasing their energy production.

WER remarks they have full backing from Guatemala's government, and that they will achieve energy self-sufficiency in Guatemala in the near future, through their work on R&D.
