Mercosur and SICA agree to start negotiations

Delegates from Mercosur and the Central American Integration System (SICA) agreed yesterday to start face to face negotiations about a wide ranging political, commercial and cooperation accord.

Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs for the Dominican Republic, Clara Quiñones de Longo, explained that was is being proposed is not a free trade agreement "due to the huge disproportions between the two block," but a political, commercial and cooperation agreement.
With regard to trade, it was agreed that the members of SICA will have the freedom to negotiate with Mercosur on an individual basis and "at different speed," according to the specific situation in each country, indicated Quiñones de Longo.

The mission will visit the countries that are a part of CAFTA: Guatemala (currently being visited), El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and will last four days. The businesspersons are planning to meet with at least 70 companies in said countries.

US to push investment in Central America

American Agriculture Secretary, Ed Schafer, will head a business mission to Central America from September 21-24.

Schafer stated that 17 agricultural business persons from the United Sates will travel with the delegation whose objective is to develop additional commercial contacts with over 70 companies in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

SICA and MERCOSUR begin FTA process

The date to start the negotiation process for a Free Association Agreement between both regions will be September 9 and 10 in Brasilia.

The Guatemalan vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Trinidad, pointed out that there is "an interest in the (Central American) region that the negotiation between SICA and MERCOSUR not be just another Free Trade Agreement, but a more integral agreement that contemplates other types of alliances.
