Less Vehicles, Less Fuel

Consistent with the fall in new car sales reported in Panama since last year, fuel consumption has decreased around 6% up to September 2018.

Data from the General Comptroller detail that from January to September 2018, 12,938 new automobile type vehicles were registered, 21% less than the 16,299 units registered in the same period of 2017.

As with the reported downward behavior in the sale of new vehicles, the sale of fuel in the country has declined for the periods concerned, falling from 882 million gallons sold from January to September 2017 to 834 million gallons in the same period of 2018.

Regarding the behavior of vehicle sales currently recorded, Patricia Vukelja, executive director of the Association of Automobile Distributors of Panama, explained to Laestrella.com.pa that "... although up to October the sale remains low compared to previous years, are within the expected."

Vukelja added that "... The economic growth the country has been experiencing could be considered exaggerated and we have reached the cyclical adjustment where there is a decline, but it was also unhealthy to grow at the pace that was happening."

Panama: Fuel Consumption Rising

In the first quarter of 2021 fuel sales in the country have shown an upward trend, as in January 59.6 million gallons were demanded, in February the figure rose to 65.3 million gallons and in March it climbed to 75.7 million gallons.

The accumulated figures show that during the first quarter of the year, 201 million gallons of fuel were sold in the Panamanian market, a figure that is 20% lower than that reported in the same period of 2020.
