Monday, November 19, 2012

Laestrella.com.pa reports that "The international organization of fishing countries has decided to follow scientific advice and keep strict fishing quotas for bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), a species that is in danger of extinction."

On Monday, at the end of the eighth day of a summit in Morocco, the 48 countries that make up the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) decided not to seek an increase in tuna quotas, a key ingredient for sushi, despite signs that stocks are recovering.

"The quota will increase from 12,900 tonnes to 13,500 tonnes per year, within the limits recommended by scientists to allow for tuna recovery."
