Monday, July 2, 2018

According to a survey carried out on June 29 by the Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH), in which 80 accommodation centers were consulted, between the mid-year vacations of 2017 and this year, the average occupancy rate fell from 68% to 65%.

Regarding the factors that influenced the downturn, Flora Ayub, executive director of the CCH, explained to Nacion.com that " ... One of them is the Football World Cup, because a lot of Costa Ricans travel to this sporting activity and, therefore, stop investing in recreational activities in the country. The second factor that, according to the hoteliers, is impacting local demand for tourism is the distribution of vacations in [different time] periods ... families have already invested at the end of the year and during Holy Week, so they are more cautious when going out again in the half term vacation period."

The article adds that " ... the consultation indicates that there are regions where better occupancy is expected. In the northern zone, especially La Fortuna, hoteliers expect demand of 73%, compared to a forecast of 59% for Guanacaste (North Pacific) and 58% for the Pacific coastal strip (Central Pacific and South Pacific)."
