There is no way now to Differentiate Between Bad People and Good

This is the aim of the bill that would expunge ex-convict's criminal records so that they can find work without their potential employers knowing about their criminal past.

The vast majority of people resolve their economic and existential problems without resorting to crime. They are obliged to act this way because of the education they received in their homes, where they were taught not only be honest and law-abiding, but also to distrust those who are not. From children we learn to discriminate between bad and good, an essential life skill. We need to distinguish between food that is good and food that is harmful to our health. We must be able to distinguish between an honest business and one that is not. That's life, continuous decision making based on our knowledge and values which is what also should govern conduct in society.

And there is a prize for people who live their life -many times with great effort- on the path of righteousness, which is to be recognized as such: honest people.

The bill, which has already progressed to the instance of the legislative branch of Costa Rica, eliminates that prize, which for many people is the main asset they want to achieve during their existence. In addition to constituting a flagrant injustice to people who are not guilty of any crime because they are equated with those who were guilty of committing one, if the project becomes law, it will override the legitimate right of employers to know about the background of people hired to be one of their collaborators.

Up until now, honest people looking for work, who are the vast majority of the unemployed, could proudly display their clean record sheet. Now some lawmakers want to make it so that it makes no difference if it is included or not. And that is not just an unfair punishment on those who strove to be honest, but also for the mentors of society, parents and teachers who find they have fewer arguments with which to educate.

If we keep moving forward in this perverse way, of non-discrimination between good and bad, why keep doing psychological evaluations to verify the ability of applicants to hold a position, if we can not know the main thing, that is whether they are reliable or not.

Helping the Inefficient Means Punishing Good Businesspeople

In Costa Rica a law has been proposed that would benefit tourism businesses suffering from financial problems - caused by the 2008 crisis!! -, readjusting their debts and repurchasing and returning their lost assets.

Beyond the dark aspects of the bill - among them that it is not known who the beneficiaries are - its purpose seems rude and unfair to entrepreneurs who managed to overcome the crisis of the last decade through proper management and undoubtedly a lot of sacrifice, and who today have healthy companies.
