Spanish region Murcia opens trade office in Panama

Spain's Murcia region opened an office in Panama City in a bid to boost trade and investment.

"Murcia and Panama have a lot in common, not least their open economies," said Ramón Luis Valcárcel, president of the Murcia autonomous community, at the opening ceremony.
Murcia has some 1.5 million inhabitants, Panama 3 million.

The activity was inaugurated yesterday, and will be open until October 9, at Hotel Barceló Guatemala.

After the United States and Mexico, Spain is the largest foreign direct investor (FDI) in the country.

Panama: Latin American Base for French Companies

French investment in Panama has reached $600 million and is projected to reach $1 billion in 2010.

An article by AFP in mipunto.com reported that the French ambassador to Panama, Pierre Henri Guignard, said: "Panama is a key player in the globalization of Latin America and our companies understand this."

FDI down in Central America and Caribbean

September 2009

The manufacturing sector as a whole saw a decline in FDI due to a sharp drop in flows to Central America and the Caribbean.

In Central America and the Caribbean (other than financial centres), the decline in FDI inflows was largely due to a 20% fall in flows to Mexico, which mainly resulted from a halving of inflows to the manufacturing sector (CNIE, 2009).
