Internet Services Awarded for $22 million

Cable Onda S.A., Cable & Wireless Panama and Liberty Technologies won the 4 year contracts to implement the service of nationwide public internet access in Panama.

The tender aims to provide WiFi Internet Access Points in three regions and a system for administration of the network. The winning companies were Cable Onda, S.A., Cable & Wireless Panama, S.A. and Liberty Technologies Corp., for a total amount of $21.6 million for the next four years, distributed as follows:

- System Network Management: Cable Onda, S.A., for a total amount of $3.8 million. 

- Access Points in the region Chiriqui, Bocas del Toro, Veraguas and Ngäbe Bugle: Cable & Wireless Panama, S.A., for a total amount of $5.7 million.

- Access Points in the region Panama, Colon-Costa Arriba, Guna Yala, Darien and Comarca Embera Wounaan): Liberty Technologies, Corp., for a total amount of $6.4 million.

- Access Points in the Colón-Costa Abajo, Cocle, Panama Oeste, Herrera and Los Santos region: Cable & Wireless Panama, S.A., for a total amount of $5.6 million.

Offers of up to $70 million for Wi-Fi Internet

In Costa Rica the consortium formed by ICE, Racsa and PC Central, offered three zones for a total amount of $70.8 million, Coopeguanacaste offered to connect zone # 2 for $20 million and Telecable offered to service zone # 3, for $15.5 million.

The Superintendency of Telecommunications stated that the program Connected Public Spaces of the National Telecommunications Fund (FONATEL), received offers from two companies and a consortium interested in developing the Public Connected Spaces program to bring free Wi-Fi to 515 zones throughout the country; including parks, squares, libraries, train stations, Civic Centers and the campuses of the 5 public universities.

Tender: Internet in Public Spaces for $45 million

May 2017

In Costa Rica a tender is being launched for the implementation of 100 MB of wireless internet access in parks, plazas, train stations and other public spaces.

$45 million will be invested in the project, and the aim is to connect 985 wireless access points in 360 districts of the country's 82 cantons, including 62 public libraries, 28 train stations and 7 civic centers for peace. The delivery of offers is scheduled for November 2017. See details of the tender.

Telecommunications Market in Panama

The entrance into the market by Digicel and Claro in 2009 has caused cellular telephony prices to fall and increased competition in promotions and special offers.

Overall, telecommunications sales in Panama are expected to exceed $1 billion in 2010, with most growth in broadband Internet and mobile phone services.

WiMax is now in Panama

Panama now has a new telcom player: Wipet's high speed state-of-the-art internet connection, WiMax.

WiMax is a wide network which provides for the wireless transmission of of data at high speeds. In contrast to Wi-Fi, this technology is mobile for metropolitan networks which allows it to offer residential and commercial services.
