Filling of Artificial Panamanian Islands Begins

Two artificial islands will be located between the grounds of the former Marcos A. Gelabert Airport and the ATLAPA Convention Center.

The project, which was awarded to the ICA-Panama company, is part of a contract signed with the State in 1996 to "design, build, maintain and operate the expressway, which also included the transfer of 29.5 acres of the then Marcos Gelabert de Paitilla Airport," according to an Article in Pa-digital.com.

Engineer Alfredo Alemán of the Los Pueblos Group, designated developer of the project by ICA, indicated to the media that the project would generate more than 760 jobs among different specialties.

125 duplex residences will be built in the first stage, out of the total 20.000 planned for the project.

ICA to build artificial islands in Panama

ICA Panamá, the local unit of Mexico's leading constructor ICA, is planning the US$140 million development of two artificial islands off Punta Pacífica.

The project will require 4 million cubic meters of infill, equivalent to two of the Egyptian pyramids, said Diego Hernández, chief executive of ICA Panamá.
