Inflation Continues Downward Trend in Costa Rica

The CPI rose 0.68% in January 2011, below the figure recorded in 2010 and lower than the average of the past 10 years, 1.5%.

The General level of the Consumer Price Index in January is about 144.054, which represents a variation of 0.68% compared with the index of December 2011, (with a value of 143.086).

The annual cumulative change for the period of February 2010 until January 2011 is 4.84%, lower than the variation for the same period in 2010 (5.34%).

In January, the groups which presented a higher variation in prices when compared to variations in the General Index (0.68%) are:

Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes

Health Travel Health

Entertainment and culture

According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), the yearly variation (January-December 2011) is 4.74%, which is less than the variation in 2010 (5.82%).

From the press release by the INEC:

The general level of the consumer price index in December was 149.862, which represents a variation of 0.92% compared with the index for the month of November (148.502).

Costa Rica: 1.12% Inflation through February

The cumulative variation of the General Index for the first two months of 2011 is 1.12%, lower than the number for the same period of 2010, which was 2.32%.

The General Consumer Price Index in February is 144.682, representing a 0.44% variation compared with the index for the month of January (144.054).

Costa Rica Ends Year with 5.82% Inflation

According to the report from the National Statistics and Census Institute consumer price index rose 5.82% in 2010.

General level of Consumer Price Index in December was 143.086, which represents a 0.74% variation compared with the November index (with a value of 142.032).

Costa Rica: Negative Inflation for September

October 2010

The Consumer Price Index for September registered the first negative change of the year.

Consumer price index in September is 140.441 representing a variation of -0.08% compared to the August index of 140.557. The cumulative variation for nine months (January to September 2010) Index is 3.87% greater than the variation for the same period last year (2.92%).
