In 2016, Costa Rica imported $142 million worth of fertilizers, 23% less than the $183 million worth imported in 2015.

In 2016 imports of fertilizers totaled $142 million, and the value imported from Russia grew by 12% compared to 2015.

Main importers  
Among the main importers of fertilizers in Costa Rica are Abonos del Pacífico, Fertica, Distribuidora Agro Comercial, El Colono and Yara, which collectively account for approximately 75% of the total value of imports. 

Changes in imports 
Between 2015 and 2016 the total volume of imported fertilizers in Costa Rica decreased slightly, going from 466,000 tons in 2015 to 462,000 tons last year. The import value fell by 23%, going down from $183 million in 2015 to $142 million in 2016.

Origin of imports 
In 2016, 33% of the volume imported by Costa Rica came from Russia, 21% from China, 9% from Canada, 6% from the USA, and 4% from Switzerland.

Price of imports 
During the months between January 2012 and December 2016, the average price per kilo imported into Costa Rica ranged between $0.62 and $0.28 per kilo. 

Between 2012 and December 2016, the average price per kilo of imports registered a reduction of 49%, decreasing from $0.59 in January 2012 to $0.30 in December 2016.
