IMF technical assistance center to be based in Guatemala

Guatemala has been chosen as the base for the International Monetary Fund's technical assistance center for Central America and the Dominican Republic.

The decision was announced that Fund's annual regional conference, which closed in El Salvador on Friday. The conference discussed economic policies and sought to identify areas where regional cooperation could be stepped up.

IMF to Open New Regional Technical Assistance Center

The IMF will open in May 2009 in Guatemala City, its new Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic Technical Assistance Center (CAPTAC-DR).

“CAPTAC-DR is an important component of the IMF’s far-reaching reforms that will enable the Fund to respond more effectively to the emerging challenges of the global economy,” said Murilo Portugal, Deputy Managing Director of the IMF.

Korea to Assist Central America in Security Matters

A meeting between the Central America Integration Secretary (SICA) and the Republic of Korea concluded with important agreements in regional cooperation, economy and security.

The Central American nations expressed their concern for the serious crime situation experienced in the region, and invited Korea to support the International Conference for Central America’s Security Strategy, planned for next year.

Tender: Phase II Regional Centre for Humanitarian Aid

A tender is being launched for the construction of a second phase of the Regional Logistics Center for Humanitarian Assistance in Panama Pacific.

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Panama:

The Government of the Republic of Panama has announced the tender for the construction of the second phase of the Regional Logistics Center for Humanitarian Assistance for Latin America and the Caribbean, and announced a national competition to design the logo of the Center, which will be the image that will identify this hub to the region and the world.

Business Council of Latin America in Honduras

On March 20th-21st businessmen and representatives of the governments of the region will meet in Tela, Honduras.

Entrepreneurs and representatives of governments in the region will attend a meeting of the International-Latin American Business Council (CEAL) to be held in Honduras on 20 and 21 March.
