Hortifruti Expands its Network of Salvadoran Suppliers

The produce division at Wal-Mart is looking for fruit and vegetable producers from El Salvador to supply its supermarkets in that country.

Hortifruti’s goal is to increase the proportion of agricultural products cultivated by Salvadoran farmers. Currently, just 30% of the agricultural products sold by Wal-Mart are from local producers, and the goal is to increase that proportion to 40%.

According to Elsalvador.com, “Among the results from the development program 'Tierra Fértil', which is aimed at small and medium farmers, there are 40 distinct products which have been brought to market. In some cases, like for the salad tomato, products are produced 100% domestically.”

The multinational chain is holding its first 2010 business roundtable, as part of a program called “Una Mano para Crecer” (A hand for growing).

In these roundtables Wal-Mart will look for suppliers of new products to be distributed through its supermarket network.
