Hondutel With New Program for Internet Access

Honduras's state-owned company launched a program for Internet Access through telephone lines.

Jorge Aguilar, Hondutel Manager, explained that the cost of the service equals that of a telephone call.

Aguilar also told newspaper Proceso Digital: "...this new service has national coverage, and the most benefited users will be those from rural areas".

Honduras: Hondutel Announces Investments

The state run telecommunications company has announced it will be investing $100 million in internet infrastructure to offer broadband and fiber optics services.

The general manager of the Honduran Telecommunications Company (Hondutel), Jesus Mejia, said in remarks published by Latribuna.hn that they will be investing approximately $100 million, about 2,200 million lempiras to increase supply in two market segments.

Nicaragua's Telecommunications Market

Currently there are 287,618 landlines, 4.8 million cell phone lines and 143,000 Internet connections in the country.

In 2009, Robert Sanson, CEO of Claro Nicaragua said the market turned over about $500 million annually.

In order to be competitive in an increasingly more dynamic market, the state-owned company Honduran Communications (Hondutel) needs to attract investment of between $400 and $500 million.
