Honduras: $140 million in Melon and Watermelon Exports

The country will export about $100 million in melon and $40 million in watermelon to the United States, Europe and Canada, between December 2008 and May 2009.

According to Hondudiario.com, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras, Hector Hernandez, said that the country has surmounted the recommendations of the United States Food and Drug Administration in regards to melon, being able to export to Canada and the United States once again."

The article also indicated that the minister announced in turn that "mangoes will begin to be exported to the United States in the coming weeks."

At the XVII International Congress of Producers and Exporters of Melon and Watermelon held in Tela, Honduras, the head of the Honduran Federation of Agricultural Exporters (FPX), Medardo Galindo, indicated that the world financial crisis and internal political conflict had not affected the pace of exports.

In 2015 the region as a whole exported $36 million worth of watermelons, led by Costa Rica and Panama who exported $14 million each, followed by Honduras, with $4 million.

Watermelon Trade figures in Central America, analyzed by the Business Inteligence Unit at CentralAmericaData.com show that in 2015 the countries in Central America exported 154,476 tons of whole watermelon, at an average price of $0.23 per kilogram.
