Honduras: Loan to Renovate Hydroelectric Station

The Inter-American Development Bank has approved a $23 million loan to renovate the Canaveral - Rio Lindo hydro station and its connection to the national grid.

From a statement issued by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB):

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a loan to Honduras for $23 million for the renovation of infrastructure for generation at the Canaveral - Rio Lindo hydro station; renovation of transmission assets that connect the station to the national grid; and improving operational and commercial efficiency of generation management of the National Electricity Company (ENEE).

In order to recover and retain the ability to generate electricity from renewable sources and contribute to the security of the energy supply in the country, this project to be executed by the ENEE, is expected to generate the following benefits: (i) extension of the complex's lifespan by at least 30 years; (Ii) ensuring the supply of nearly 10% of the electricity demand in the country, at lower cost; (Iii) improvement in generation efficiency and increasing installed capacity by 20.8 MW; (Iv) reducing CO2 emissions; and (v) better business management capacity of electricity generation.

The Congress of Costa Rica has finally approved a $500 million loan for the state electricity company to carry out electric generation and transmission works, including three geothermal plants.

At a cost of $60 million, the Italian company Franco Tosi Meccanica will start renovating in January 2013 the "Central America" and "Carlos Fonseca" hydropower stations.

In December 2008, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $40.2 million loan for this project, which five years later looks set to materialize, now with additional funding from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE).

Hydroelectric Station Financed for $10.5 million

The Inter-American Investment Corporation has approved a loan for the Panamanian hydroelectric project ‘San Lorenzo’, a plant that will generate 40 GWh per year.

The IIC loan to San Lorenzo Hydro, S.A. in Panama will help to promote renewable power generation.

IDB Finances Projects for $200 Million in Nicaragua

The Inter-American Development Bank is financing infrastructure and electric power projects in the country.

Mirna Lievano, IDB spokesperson in the country, highlighted the construction of highway Acoyapa - San Carlos and the upkeep of rural roads across the country.

From local newspaper Elnuevodiario.com: "Regarding renewable energy generation, she expressed that IDB has designed a medium term strategy, which focuses initially on energy transmission, and then on renewing hydroelectric power plants, such as 'Santa Bárbara' and 'Centroamérica'".
