Central America: Prices of Imported Fertilizers Down 43%

In the last five years, the average price of a kilo of fertilizers imported in the countries in the region fell by 43%, going from $0.54 to $0.31.

Main importers
Among the main buyers of the region are Abonos del Pacífico, Fertica, Distribuidora Agro Comercial, Fertilizantes de Centroamérica, Colono Agropecuario and Austin Caribbean. Altogether they make up approximately 23% of the total purchased by the Central American countries in 2016.

Variation of regional imports 
Between 2015 and 2016, the volume of imported fertilizers fell by 5%, going from 2.1 million tons in 2015 to 2 million tons last year.

The value imported decreased by 25%, falling from $804 million in 2015 to $607 million in 2016.

Imports by country 
In 2016, the main importer of fertilizers in Central America was Costa Rica with $142 million, followed by Guatemala with $138 million, Honduras with $122 million, Nicaragua with $81 million, El Salvador with $69 million and Panama with $54 million.
