Honduras: Optimism Over Shrimp Production

Climatic conditions have favored shrimp production this year, and according to estimates made by the sector, the year could close with an exported volume over 70 million pounds.

The union for this product estimates that if the trend seen in production figures continues until September, 2017 could close with even better figures than those achieved in 2014, considered one of the best performing periods in recent years. Figures from the National Association of Aquaculture Producers of Honduras (Andah) indicate that up to September 30 the volume exported was 45,480,000 pounds.

Víctor Wilson, president of the Andah, "... believes that the aquaculture sector has registered an unprecedented year in the export sector in 2017 and the results obtained surpass those of 2014, when on September 20, 41,128,388 million pounds were reported. Wilson believes that weather conditions have been key to surpassing shrimp farming expectations. On top of this, he added, is an improvement in productivity levels with the incorporation of new techniques to increase yields per hectare in several companies."

"... The Honduran shrimp has North America as its main market. Up to September, 10,239,963 pounds were exported to Mexico and 6,264,077 pounds to the United States.  The volume exported to North America was 16,504,040 pounds, equivalent to 36.3% of the total.  To the European Union, 15,639,238 pounds exported, or 34% of the total volume, notably to Germany and England, where cooked shrimp is in great demand. "

Honduran Shrimp: Sales to Taiwan Up 75%

During the first half of 2020, shrimp exports to Taiwan totaled 7.8 million pounds, a volume that is 75% higher than that reported for the same period in 2019.

Figures from the National Association of Aquaculture Producers of Honduras (Andah) show that the Taiwanese market is one of the most consolidated in recent years, since between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020, exports of Honduran shrimp to that destination increased by 3.36 million pounds, from 4.44 to 7.79 million pounds.

Honduran producers estimate that at the end of 2019 the volume traded abroad will register a reduction of six million pounds compared to what was reported in the previous year.

Directors of the National Association of Aquiculturists of Honduras (Andah), explained that one of the factors that has affected the sector are the low prices that are recorded internationally.

Shrimps: Export Begins 2019 with Good Numbers

In the first two months of the year, shrimp sales from Honduras abroad totaled $35 million, surpassing the $29 million recorded in the same period in 2018.

Figures from Honduran businessmen detail that between the first two months of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the volume exported increased from 9 million pounds to 11 million pounds.

Good Prospects for the Shrimp Industry

The Honduran aquaculture industry recorded a 14% increase in shrimp exports in the first half compared to the same period in 2015, and attributed the result to an improvement in productivity.

Figures from the National Association of Aquaculture Producers in Honduras (Andah) indicate that between January and June the volume exported was 23.9 million pounds, up from the almost 21 million pounds exported in the same period in 2016.
