Honduras: Safe Tourist Areas

The project to produce a tourist map which indicates which are the safest places for visitors continues, due to high crime rates affecting the industry.

Friday, July 5, 2013

It is estimated that in the last five years, visitor arrivals have declined by 10%, which could jeopardize the target revenue of $700 million expected for this year.

Countries such as the USA, Canada, England, Italy, Germany, Spain and Japan have warned citizens about the risk of traveling to Honduras.

"Our main partner has always been the U.S. and this is what is affecting us the most, because tourists from this country spend the most currency," said the president of the National Chamber of Tourism of Honduras (CANATURH) Epaminondas Marinakys . "They are informing (their citizens) that Honduras is highly violent and they must take a lot of precautions. This means most of the time that tourists wont come here," he lamented.

This situation has prompted the authorities to create a tourist map showing safe places for visitors."It is about following up 'Corredores Turísticos Seguros' (Safe Tourism Areas), designed in 2012. The projection for this year is that the tourist industry has increased by 8%, while in the first half this percentage only reached 2%", reported Laprensa.hn.

On the other hand companies such as American Airlines say they haven't had any problems. "Flights are arriving full, the movement has been the same as in other years. The number of visitors has not dropped," said Francis Vallecillo, general manager of the company.
