The Minister of Tourism, Nelly Jerez, noted that the environmental impact studies prepared in conjunction with the Institute of Anthropology still await in June the final decision of UNESCO (the area is considered world heritage).
"The inauguration of the first phase of the airport terminal facilities is scheduled for August 15," said Richmond Hurslton, Mayor of Guanaja.
The financing has been assured by the Inter-American Development Bank, but the construction works that would increase the influx of international tourism by 20% are still awaiting a political decision.
In the district of Pedasi, Los Santos, an airfield has been inaugurated which will facilitate tourist access to the area.
If no agreement is reached with InterAirports, the concession for the new Honduran airport at Palmerola could be put out to tender.
