Honduras: Construction Companies Focus on Social Housing

Construction companies are negotiating with the banking system for access to preferential interest rates in order to finance housing projects for lower-income sectors.

In order to alleviate the poor performance that construction sector has seen in recent months, construction companies plan to focusing on developing high rise housing projects, which, in the view of the entrepreneur Ernesto Lazarus, "... is a solution for those who have difficulty buying a house because of the price of land."

Silvio Larios, general manager of the Honduran Chamber of the Construction Industry (Chico), said in an article on Laprensa.hn that "... they are working in parallel with the government sector so that in the next 15 days there could be good news which will boost the entire industry. Among the measures planned is improving conditions for homeownership to some segments of the population who have a hard time getting loans from private banks. "

Regarding the boost which the construction sector aims to give to high rise housing projects, Lazarus said, "... it is a segment in Honduras which is 10 years behind that of Guatemala and El Salvador."

El Salvador: Preferential Rates for Mortgage Credits

A bill on preferential interest rates suggested by the industry would reduce the cost of a home loan by up to 50% and boost construction in the country.

In order for the construction sector to recover from a 2013 that ended with a negative number it is necessary to reduce interest rates on mortgage loans so that more people are able to buy a home, therefore the business sector is recommending a proposal for a law on preferential interest, which was proposed more than six years ago.
