Honduras: Compulsory Insurance for Tourists

A rate of $3 will be charged to tourists for entering the country in order to provide assistance in case of incidents during their stay.

Monday, May 18, 2015

The proposal is similar to the free insurance for tourists in Panama implemented in previous years, and aims not only to provide assistance in the case of theft or other accidents but also to use part of the funds raised in the international promotion of the country as a tourist destination.

Epaminondas Marinakys, president of the National Chamber of Tourism of Honduras (CANATURH) informed Laprensa.hn that "... the payment will be added to the migration rate and will be managed through a trust."

"... "It's a service that tourists will be able to make use of for 30 days and we want to establish a place where they can call in order to attend to them. The rate includes a helicopter service if necessary. One of the complaints we've had is that if someone has an accident they have nowhere to turn to, from the time that tourists entering the country they will be given a card with identification so they know where to call.
