Honduras: Coffee Exports Will Total $700 Million

Coffee growers are forecasting an output of 4.5 million quintals for the current coffee harvest.

This activity has not been affected by the economic and political crisis in the country, explained Emilio Medina, coffee businessman.

"...Honduras is the only Central American country in which coffee production is growing ... 90% of the harvest is owned by small growers", told Medina to newspaper Proceso.hn.

Honduran Coffee Exports Up 35%

To date exports have totaled 6.6 million bags (weighing 46 kilos), 35% more than in the same period of the previous harvest when exports amounted to 4.9 million bags.

Exports won't be affected because the end of the 2008/09 harvest is close.

This was remarked by Samuel Reyes, president of the National Coffee Fund, who added that "the political situation won't affect the coffee industry".

"The 2008/09 coffee harvest in Honduras - the second largest exporter in the region after Guatemala - comes to an end the last day of September, and most of the grains have already been shipped", reported newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.
