Honduras: 66% Drop in Cement Production

In the last two years, the production of cement has fallen from 150,000 tons per month in 2008 to 90,000 in 2010.

The Honduran cement situation has led developers, together with the country's Construction Chamber, to request the government to intervene quickly with policies to stimulate the sector.

Juan Carlos Sikafi, head of the Honduran Construction Industry Chamber (CHICO), commented to Laprensa.hn that, "the government must do something to reduce interest rates on bank loans to make it easier to obtain credit, as has been done in the US".

Drought Affecting Milk Production in Panama

In the Azuero region, the most affected by the lack of rain, milk production has fallen by 80%.

Under normal conditions, the region produces an average of 25,000 liters per day, but currently it is only making 5,000.

According to a report in Prensa.com, in some areas such as Corozal and El Cedro, 90% of water sources have dried up.

15% Drop in Guatemalan Pork Output

In the last four years pork production has fallen 15% with 497,000 head of pigs in 2010.

The data is the result of the last pig census conducted by the Guatemalan Association of Pig Breeders (Apogua in Spanish). Apogua's president, Marco Tulio Figueroa, indicated that one of the reasons for the reduction of is the low price locally compared to the high cost of production (fuel and concentrated feed).

Milk Production Drops 50% in Nicaragua

The country's milk production has dropped to 500.000 monthly liters, 50% less than the same period of 2008, due to severe droughts.

Faganic, the Livestock Breeders Association of Nicaragua, called on the Government to implement measures to help combat the sector's crisis.
