Honduras: $2 Billion Available for Projects

The funds will be used in infrastructure projects such as the Patuca III hydro power plant.

William Chong Wong, finance minister, explained that the money comes from several international institutions such as the World Bank, the IDB, CABEI and the Governments of Taiwan and Europe.

Chong noted that “the government could create between 10,000 and 12,000 jobs via these projects, which include the Patuca III dam, roads and improving the facilities of Port Cortés”.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China will provide the funds to carry out the Patuca III hydroelectricity project.

The plant is planned to be built in the eastern region of Honduras, and will have capacity to generate up to 524 megawatts of clean energy with a total price of $1.2 billion.

In the southeast of the country between Olancho and El Paraíso, the construction of the hydroelectric project is beginning.

By October 2013 the main works should be completed and commercial operation is expected to start in 2014.

The new hydroelectric plant will generate 104 megawatts, produced by two Kaplan turbines of 52 megawatts each.

The funding of $300 million for the construction of the Patuca III hydroelectric project has been approved by the bank Eximbank.

Financial Secretary, William Chong Wong said that negotiations of both the technical and political details with China have reached the final phase, which has led to the approval of funding by the bank.

The Honduran Council of Ministers signed contracts with China's Sinohydro for the construction of the plant.

Carlos Dias, project manager, told the media after the signing of the agreement, that they hope to be conducting the first tests in November 2013.
