High security prison cells for Guatemala

Guatemala will spend between $6 to $8 million to improve the El Boqueron, Cuilapa, Santa Rosa and El Infiernito prisons.

With the support of the American government, Guatemala is receiving an assessment on prisons, with 6 to 8 months projected for the installation of the modules.

The article by Rodrigo Perez published in Siglo XXI, says that "the Minister of Governance, Salvador Gandara, said that 'the high impact prisons' will be used to hold inmates linked to crimes such as kidnap, drug trafficking, and crimes on women."

Guatemala to Build a Maximum Security Prison

The project, which is in the planning stage, is for accommodation for about a thousand prisoners.

The overpopulation seen in various jails around the country has forced the authorities to seek options to address the problem. Currently, among the Ministry of Interior’s plans is the construction of a maximum security prison.

The Government presented the draft of the new maximum security prison to be built with a donation from the Government of Taiwan.

Nery Morales, Interior Ministry spokesman said that they have not yet identified the property where it will be built, but are managing two options. He added that they are awaiting a U.S. architect specialized in these types of constructions.

The Government wants the complex to be inaugurated before the end of its mandate.

Minister Carlos Menocal reported they are currently looking for suitable locations to build the prison, which will feature the highest international security standards, he added.

“It will become the most secure penitentiary in the country, topping Fraijanes II, the current highest security prison in Guatemala”, reported Prensalibre.com.
