Guatemala: Slight Increase in Tourism

As of July 1, 069, 805 visitors have entered the country, 2.3% more than in the same period in 2011.

According to the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Intur), during the same period, the amount of foreign exchange recorded increased by 1.4%, with $784 million coming in.

Mariano Beltranena, president of Guatemala’s Chamber of Tourism (Camtur) consulted on the issue of hotel occupancy in the capital said the occupation is similar to last year with a share of between 60% and 65%. "We would like to keep growing by 10%, business is stable and has not grown."

"Beltranena said that if the country wants to change the trend it has to comply with the National Tourism Policy, which is a fundamental amendment to the Organic Law of Inguat", reported Prensalibre.com.

Tourism Up 17% in First Half 2010

From January to June 2010 a total of 4.556.526 tourists visited Central America, 651.682 more than the same period of 2009.

Tourism has grown in Central America during the first six months of the year by 17% over the same period of 2009, according to preliminary data offered by the various Ministries of Tourism in the region (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama).

Costa Rica tourism to growth by 8 or 9%

The National Chamber of Tourism in Costa Rica expects that the sector will grow between 8 and 9% this year, an increase which as been labeled as "satisfactory" in an environment of financial crisis at the world level.

The president of Canatur, Gonzalo Vargas, said that "its is not the same as the growth rate in 2007 (11%), but taking current conditions into consideration, having a growth rate of 8 o 9% is more than satisfactory." The businessman added that tourism at the world level has been growing at an average of 2%, which is why he was happy that Costa Rica is going to obtain a rate that "is 3 or 4 times higher than the global average.
