Guatemala launches drive to lure tourists from Asia

Guatemalan is to take part in two Asian tourism affairs in an effort to double the number of visitors it receives from the Far East.

Guillermo Novelly, deputy director of the tourism office Inguat, said he was putting the finishing touches to plans for Guatemalan stands at fairs in Tokyo and Taiwan.
The JATA fair in Tokyo is being held from September 19 through 21 in conjunction with Japan's annual tourism congress. Later the Guatemalan officials will head for Taiwan to take part in Taipei's International Tourism Fair from October 31 through November 2.

The fair’s latest edition focuses on presenting underused tourism options in the country.

200 purchasers from different countries are expected to participate at the event, which takes place at Hotel Ramada Herradura in Belén, until May 23.

Different touristic sub-sectors will be present at the event, including “youth and educational tourism, beauty, health and relaxation, and tourism alternatives geared for the elder”, explained María Amalia Revelo, marketing director of Costa Rica’s Tourism Institute.
