Guatemala guarantees growth of corn production of up to 30 per cent

The Government of Guatemala says that the harvest of white corn will grow by as much as 30 per cent this year, enough to satisfy local demand and possibly even to export some surplus to el Salvador.

Guatemala's Minister of Agriculture, Raúl Robles, said the government's Basic Grain Emergency Plan will ensure that white corn production will rise to 36.5 million quintals. A quintal weighs 101.5 pounds, or just over 46 kilograms.

Corn in El Salvador: Production and Import

Between 2011 and 2012 El Salvador spent $160 million on the purchase of white maize, despite having the best performance per hectare of grain in the region.  

Even though in the last nine years El Salvador has recorded the highest average agricultural yield, data provided by the Economic Integration System (SIECA) reveals that in 2012, the country imported 83,231 tonnes of white maize.

Despite the announcement that there could be a shortfall in the production of white maize, the harvest ended up being 37 million quintals, a million more than in 2011.

Efraín Medina, head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA in Spanish), said: "We are concerned about the lack of rain or the inconsistency with which it fell in the days that are most fundamental to the grain, however, due to the efforts MAGA has made in delivering improved seeds and fertilizer, we were able to exceed the figure and ensure good production, since the yield per acre amounted to 30.65%. "

Guatemala: 57% Increase in Corn Crop

Guatemalan corn growers expect the harvest for the period 2011-2012 to be the best in the last 20 years.

The expected production for this crop, beginning in August 2011 and ending in January 2012, is 30 million quintals according to Jorge Gonzalez, manager of the Agricultural Cooperative Pipiltlán in Asuncion Mita, Jutiapa.

Honduras: Farmers Guarantee Corn Production

Despite losses due to the heavy rains, an agricultural association of basic grains producers has assured corn supplies.

For the forthcoming harvest, 12.9 million hundredweight of corn production is predicted.

The president of the Honduran National Association of Basic Grain Producers (Prograno in Spanish), Luis Donaire, told La Tribuna that they, "do not expect problems due to the floods last month or due to the heavy rain that may fall in September and October".
