Another bidding process, to provide the same services at Port Santo Tomás de Castilla, was suspended until further notice.

Container Inspection Contract Could be Revoked in Guatemala

In Guatemala, officials are studying the possibility of cancelling a contract signed with company “Desarrollos Circe”, for unobtrusive inspection of containers at ports.

The contract was awarded on October 21st, 2009. Since then, farmer, commercial, financial and industrial associations of companies have repeatedly complained of the high fees charged for the service ($22.99 per container), which they believe have a negative effect on imports and exports.

Five companies have submitted bids for inspecting containers at Port Quetzal.

They are "Prosersa", "Sertec", "Port Security Inter (PSI)", "S2 Global Screening Solutions" and "Desarrollos Circe".

"... the board decided to reject the offers by PSI, S2 Global and Desarrollos Circe, while admitting Prosersa and Sertec, whom bid $17.85 and $20.85 per container, respectively", reported Elperiodico.com.gt.

On September 16th, bids will be received for providing non intrusive X-Ray container inspection services at ports.

So far, ten companies have expressed interest in providing the service. 7 have applied for Port Quetzal while the other 3 have done it for Santo Tomás Port.

Guatemala to Tender Container Inspections

Quetzal and Santo Tomas de Castilla port companies launched the tender process for the service for a second time.

The port companies tried to hire a non-intrusive container inspection service through X-ray last year, but the Mexican Company, Bofica, appealed before the Fifth Chamber of the Administrative Court, alleging that it had existing contracts with the State.
