Guatemala: Today´s Tourism Industry

Although in recent years the number of visitors to the country has shown an upward trend, the occupancy rate has not increased in the same proportion.

From the first chapter of the report "Towards a modern and decentralized tourism" by the Association for Research and Social Studies:

Often, the success of tourism in a country is measured by the number of international visitor arrivals. From that point of view, it is worth mentioning the milestone of 2004, when for the first time the figure of one million international visitors was passed. Then in 2013, another important goal was achieved, as more than two million visitors were recorded. Therefore in almost ten years, Guatemala has doubled the number of visitors it receives.

It should be noted that the registered number of visits by land are those that have driven growth over the last decade. In fact, in 2014, seven out of ten visits to the country were recorded at land borders. Meanwhile visits by air have had a more moderate growth and those registered by sea have been volatile, as denoted in Figure 1.

After the year 2017 provided the sector with income of $840 million, 31% more than in 2016, the union has carried out a new review and plans to generate up to $900 million this year.

Figures from the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute's Statistics Bulletin for 2016 reveal an increase in the number of tourists who arrived in the country aboard cruise ships, as well as other data relevant to the tourism sector.

Average daily spending per tourist fell by 13.4% compared to 2014, with average stays registered of 17 days.

The Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) has published the annual results of inbound and outbound tourism, corresponding to 2015.

An announcement has been made for the opening in 2016 of a luxury hotel with 450 rooms, of the Dreams brand, in the coastal town Buenaventura.

The firm is continuing its expansion in Panama with a luxury hotel under the brand name "Dreams Resorts & Spas" construction in the hotel zone of Buenaventura.
