Guatemala: Spanish company, Unión Fenosa, Receives Energy Offers

Eight power generation companies have submitted technical and financial offers to supply 240MW.

The participating companies include hydroelectric power generators Hidroxacbal and Renace as wells as Generadora del Norte, Puerto Quetzal Power (PQP), Generadora del Este (in conjunction with Electrogeneración), the La Laguna power plant, Duke Energy International and the Magdalena cogeneration project.

"The purchase will provide energy to between 4 and 5% of two distribution companies' customers, those paying the non-social price. The companies, Deocsa and Deorsa, together serve 1.3 million Guatemalan users," reports Prensalibre.com.

Eight companies have submitted bids for power generation totaling 268 MW for the period May 2013 to April 2015.

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that "the bids for power generation by the companies Electrogeneración and Generadora del Este are the lowest priced at $7 per kilowatt, while Puerto Quetzal Power (PQP) and Duke Energy submitted offers of between $10.52 and $13.25 ".

International Energy Tender Attracts 24 Companies

A tender for the provision of 800 MW of electricity for the next 15 years has attracted companies producing energy using wind power, hydro power, biomass, bunker fuel, coal and natural gas.

Among the companies interested in the bidding which will take place in January 2012 are, Cutuco Energy, Italy's Enel, los ingenios Pantaleón, La Unión and Magdalena, among others, said Carlos Colom Bickford, president of the National Energy Commission (CNEE).

Actis to Invest in Clean Energy in Guatemala

The investment fund that acquired the operation of Natural Gas in Guatemala has announced other investments in renewable energy generation.

For $345 million, Actis, a British investment fund, acquired 90% of the shares of the Eastern and Western Distributors of Energy (Deorsa and Deocsa) from Gas Natural Fenosa.
