Guatemala: 55 Thousand Jobs Lost Due to Crisis

The numbers are according to the latest survey of 840 companies by the Association for Research and Social Studies (ASIES) during the period from January 2008 to January 2009.

Ruben Narciso, ASIES analyst, reported that survey results show that companies have not created new jobs like in previous years.

Prensalibre.com reported the analyst's statements about the results of the survey: "Forty-two companies out of one hundred felt that they had reduced production in January 2009, against only 19 companies that reported having increased production and 38 which said they had not changed production."

Costa Rica: Unemployment Rate Falls to 19%

For the moving quarter from November 2020 to January 2021, the unemployment rate in the country decreased to 19%, which is slightly lower than the 20% reported for the period from October to December last year.

A survey by UCCAEP of 405 companies from various sectors revealed that there will probably be more unemployment in the second half of the year.

Hassel Fallas wrote in an article in Nacion.com: "Shirley Saborío, director of UCCAEP (Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Private Enterprise Associations,) explained that the survey presented yesterday revealed that the index of business confidence in employment for the second quarter is 4.12 points out of a possible 10. During the same period in 2008, it was 6.15.

ILO expects more unemployment in the region

According to the latest report from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) less jobs will be created in 2009 due to the economic crisis.

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports: "With growth forecasts of between 2% and 3% compared to the 5% average for the last five years, "the generation of jobs will be not be enough to meet the demand for labor and, hence, the levels of unemployment will probably increase" in the region, according to the Labor Panorama 2008 report".

Guatemala: Employment drops 30%

Personnel recruiters agreed that employment has been reduced by at least 30% in the last year.
