Guatemala Readies Oil Bidding

By the end of the month, the bidding dates for 12 new oil concessions should be known, when the corresponding governmental agreements are published.

Carlos Meany, minster of Energy and Mines, remarked that 7 new exploitation areas are located in Petén, 3 in the Pacific Ocean, 50 km away from San José port, while the remaining are located in Retalhuleu, Huehuetenango, Quiché and Alta Verapaz.

Three areas with oil production potential will be put out to tender on January 2010, out of a total twelve.

Of the three areas, two are located inland, and one is offshore in Guatemalan waters, explained Carlos Meany, Energy and Mines Minister.

Guatemala's Ministry of Energy and Mines will invite bids for exploring six areas with potential oil fields.

The announcement was made by Carlos Meany, as he received approval from the Council of Ministries to proceed with the bidding process.

Melaney explained in " Petén, we will invite bids for areas PTN-1, PTN-4 and Laguna Blanca, in addition to three areas in the Pacific Ocean".

Authorities are preparing the procedure to put the areas for oil exploration and exploitation to tender, and expect to hold the international bidding during the first quarter of 2009.

According to the head of the Ministry of Energy and Mining (MEM), Carlos Meany, they have established 13 oil fields that can be explored, and eventually, to extract both natural gas and crude oil.
